## What I remember today on the [[2025-12-03]]
I wanted to make the effort and go to see [[Nicola Hodgetts|Nik]]. It's not been that long since [[Albert Hodgetts|Grandad]] has passed, these times can hit hard, and I wasn't going to assume that my [[Robert Mark Hodgetts|Dad]] would make the effort (he hadn't, at least not at the point when I left later in the afternoon).
She was on a video call with [[Julie|Julie]] when I arrived. After that we sat on the sofa and talked for a few hours. It was good

My first time on the ward proper, last was the [[2026-01-07 1121 Ward 1 MTD|MDT]], were I wasn't actually doing anything.
This day was not the best experience that I can remember. No one knew what to do with me, I just stood in the office for what seemed like half hour until I over heard on the the nurses saying to the healthcare assistants that [[Kevin 2025-11-07|Kevin]] liked to play [[Scrabble|scrabble]], I which point I quickly interjected "That's something that I can do", finally I had a tread I could pull on, something to do.
And that's when I met Kevin for the first time. We played [[Chess|chess]], he won, although I prioritised a good interaction over winning. He was bed bound, I didn't know what was wrong with him, but he had tremors, spoke in a whisper at times. In the end I felt as though I'd done something good, not exactly made a difference, but a small step at least.

## Today's reflection
The good/ and the bad
So far, the best session I've had [[Volunteering at Harplands Ward 1|volunteering]] at [[Harplands Hospital|Harplands]]. I surprised myself how I put myself out there, socially awkward, yes, or at least that's how I felt, but I did activity get myself in there.
[[Kevin 2025-11-07|Kevin]] didn't recognise me, however, I've only ever seen him twice before.
As [[Naomi 2025-10-10|nurse]] was showing me out and we were talking, I said 'service users' she said 'no they're patients and they know that' 'service users is for other combined health users'. I need to look this up, on [[Harplands Hospital Ward 1|Ward 1]] there seems to be a hierarchy, not [[Patient Centred Care|patient centred care]], they are the patient. Is this right? I don't agree with it. Can I change it?
[[Katie, Millie's Mum|Katie]] & [[Millie, Jess' friend|Millie]] came around tonight. Did I do enough to talk to Katie, I never feel like I do, but then I don't want to do too much so I guess it was adequate.

Went back with 2 free play tickets, didn't win anything but they let [[Jessica Louise Hodgetts|Jess]] and [[Isabella Jaime Hodgetts|Bella]] keep picking, they must have had 4-5 goes each before a number came up. After all that, we'd won the boobie prize, a bottle of Robinson's orange cordial! Pmsl

[[Margret Dianne Hodgetts|Mum]] called round today to pickup the cards for [[David Robert Beswick||Grandad Beswick]]'s funeral flowers. It turned out that she does going to see grandad at the [[C. Edwards & Son Funeral Directors|funeral directors]], on her own--no one else wanted to go. She didn't press upon me to go, but I wasn't going to let her go on her own, so I met her there.
It's strange seeing him there, it's him, but it not him. He was stone cold to the touch, he'd lost a lot of weight. But his nose was a funny shape, like it'd been pushed on by something and they hadn't straightened it out, and his mouth was closed and his lips were thin and pulled back at the edges in a way that he never looked while alive. Although, he looked a lot more peaceful than the last time I saw him, when he died. Even though it'd be the last time I see him, and I'll never forget the image, that doesn't replace the Grandad I see in my minds eye--a twinkle in his eye and a half laugh half smile on his face as he's making a joke about something.
I asked my mum if she wanted some time alone with him, she said she didn't, but she probably wouldn't say anyway. I feel it's important to have that time alone to say say goodbye in your own way, where the moment isn't influenced by anyone else, it's a more personal goodbye. Mum said she need to use the WC, which gave me some time alone. After which I met her outside and said that I needed the loo before we leave (I didn't). I spent a while before I came out and I was glad to see she'd gone back in. I wanted her to be the last one to see him, so I waited outside until she came back out.
Shortly after, we hugged goodbye and I drove home. She sent me a text later that evening thanking me for being there. I am surprised my [[Robert Mark Hodgetts|Dad]] wasn't going, seen as she was on her own, probably unset the gym routine.

# Write something to be read at the funeral
A late night draft:
Grandad Bob, there's are pressure who leave an imprint in your life in ways you recognise, and many you don't.
I'll never say a bad word to anyone
I'm never angry with anyone
I'm never frustrated with anyone
I see everyone as a friend
I always have a smile for everyone
I'm continuing the Beswick tradition of bad jokes!
Thankfully grandad, your, and everyone around I think for who I am today
I can't speak to you anymore, but you live one though me in all the ways I see the world today
**Adapt grandad Hodgetts poem?**
# Message for flowers card
## Distilled from AI
You left a mark on me that will last forever. Because of you, I approach the world with patience and friendship (and plenty of bad jokes, in true Beswick fashion). I cant talk to you anymore, but I carry you with me every day.
## My revision
You left a mark on us that will last forever. Because of you, I approach the world with patience and friendship (and plenty of bad jokes). Though you are not here, I carry you with me every day.
Love always Bobbie and Erin xx

Whispering Hope by Septimus Winner
Soft as the voice of an angel,
Breathing a lesson unheard,
Hope with a gentle persuasion,
Whispers her comforting word.
Wait till the darkness is over,
Wait till the tempest is done,
Hope, for the sunshine tomorrow,
After the shower is gone.
Then when the night is upon us,
Why should the heart sink away?
When the dark midnight is over,
Watch for the breaking of day.

#### Suggested Essay Structure
**Introduction**: Briefly outline the characteristics you are going to consider in your answer.
- GMC guidance Communication and interpersonal skills
- GMC guidance Professional knowledge
**Main Body**: Analyse how the two chosen characteristics are important for:
- Patient-centred care
- Professionalism
**Conclusion**: Briefly summarise why these characteristics are important to medical practitioners.
### Answer
#### Introduction.
In the UK patient-centred care is a core principle enshrined in the NHS Constitution for England (Department of Health and Social Care, 2023). This principle, combined with medical professionalism, which forms the trust between the public and healthcare professionals, is vital for effective patient care (GMC, 2024). These requirements shape the essential characteristics of an effective medical practitioner. This essay will examine two critical characteristics--Professional knowledge, and Communication and interpersonal skills--and how they promote patient-centred care and professionalism.
#### Communication and interpersonal skills.
An important characteristic for a medical practitioner is the ability to communicate effectively with the patient, and all those involved in their care, whilst also respecting the patient's right to confidentiality (GMC, 2024; GMC, 2018). For a doctor to accurately inform a patient of their care, they must communicate in an honest and open way, a way that matches the patient's level of the understanding and encourages discussion. Through this approach, a doctor lays the groundwork for informed consent, by ensuring disclosure and comprehension. By demonstrating empathy and compassion towards the patient, they foster a positive relationship, which allows the patient to be vulnerable enough to share information that may be needed in their care (GMC, 2018). Moreover, by acknowledging the patient's values, feelings and wishes, the doctor creates a collaborative approach where the patient is empowered to be an equal decision maker in their own care (GMC, 2024; GMC, 2018). Ensuring informed consent through honest disclosure and patient comprehension, enables shared decisions with the patient and, if appropriate, other non-medical patient advocates--a core principle of patient-centred care. By adhering to the patient's right to confidentiality and maintaining honest, non-judgemental dialogue, the medical professional promotes professionalism by establishing integrity and trust (GMC, 2024; GMC, 2018).
#### Professional Knowledge.
The application of professional knowledge is a required characteristic for a medical practitioner to deliver effective patient care (GMC, 2024; GMC, 2018). Through professional experience, a doctor will have knowledge in a wide range of settings where patients receive care (GMC, 2018). This diverse care experience not only imparts an understanding of how care is delivered across the health service, but also enables them to better identify and provide care for patients with more diverse needs. Through this understanding the doctor can facilitate a personalised and seamless continuity of care for the patient as they interact with various care services (GMC, 2024; GMC, 2018). An effective doctor must also have a commitment to continual professional development (GMC, 2024; GMC, 2018). Through research and the proficient application of the scientific method, and continual learning, they maintain up-to-date knowledge. Informed decisions are essential for effective patient care and maintaining patient trust in that care. A doctor must also have knowledge and understanding of population health and how diseases and illnesses affect groups of people in their communities (GMC, 2018). Through this holistic approach the doctor can provide personalised care and illness prevention. These outcomes deliver a holistic, seamless personalised social care and illness prevention, which are features of patient-centred care (GMC, 2024; GMC, 2018). The commitment to maintaining up-to-date knowledge and skills promotes professionalism through integrity and trust.
##### Summary
The essential characteristics of Professional knowledge, and Communication and interpersonal skills, help to ensure patient-centred care by tailoring care to the needs, preferences, and values of the individual patient, and placing them at the centre of all decisions about their health and wellbeing. They also promote professionalism by upholding high personal and professional standards, ensuring patients are able to trust medical practitioners with their health, and lives (GMC, 2024).

# Essay Structure
## Introduction.
The introduction should be used to focus the reader in on the subject. Think of the introduction as an inverted triangle (a funnel) that moves from general background information to your specific, narrow argument (thesis).
### What is the general topic/field
Start with a broad, engaging statement. Provide necessary background or common knowledge to orient the reader.
### Why is this topic question important problematic
Identify the key issue, debate, or "gap" in existing research/discussion that your paper addresses. State the problem or the objective.
### How will you answer the question, and **What** is your main thesis/argument?
State your clear, specific, one- or two-sentence argument. This is the **main claim** your entire paper supports.
### How will the paper be structured
Briefly outline the main points or sections of the body paragraphs.
## Main body
### PEER System (paragraph structure)
- (Point) You point argument
- (Evidence) The evidence to backup your point (reference, citation, etc.)
- (Explain) An analysis (at least for my last assignment) the how and why. This could be multiple how + why, how +why, how + why
- (Review/Link) The link back to your main argument/thesis/what-the-paper-it-about

## three ways I made progress today
1. spoke to someone I was uncomfortable talking to, and had a good conversation
2. spoke to a stranger, had a good conversation too, I was to least ackward too
3. volunteering after lunch is much better, more people
## what happened today
Assignment is not going well. I can't focus, I'm writing, but it just keep starting again, and again, and again, when I figure out a better way to structure it. I've written loads, but it jus the start, repeated. I'm trying to get the structure right and then I think I can write it. Figuring out how the PEER system will help. I think I know what I'm doing, it's just the getting it onto paper.
At [[Volunteering at Harplands Ward 1|volunteering]] I was glad to hear that [[Kevin 2025-11-07|Kevin]] the GP had left the ward for somewhere in Shropshire (a home I think). I figured he maybe had Huntington's and he would only go downhill, but I was glad to hear that he was an [[Alcoholic|alcoholic]] and it's some form of brain damage from the [[Alcohol|alcohol]]. I mean that not great, but way better than what I thought. The nurse also said he's diagnosed with [[Bi-Polat|Bi-polar]] which would explain why he didn't want to interact the last couple of times I saw him.
There's also a young black woman patient, [[Leah 2025-12-05|Leah]], who's been there previously. I haven't talked to her before because she's so far away from my comfort zone, I didn't know how to. Well today i struck up a conversation with her. Did it go well? i think so, it didn't exactly flow, but it was a good start, something to build on.
I think the staff on the ward are getting used to me now

So far I have three options:
- [[Day Planner]]
- [[Task Notes]]
- [[Task Genius]]
## day planner
-
### day planner testing
you get a section in daily note like this
- [ ] 07:20 - 08:30 this is a time block on the calendar
[clock::2025-12-23T07:29:47--2025-12-22T07:42:45]
[clock::2025-12-23T07:43:32--2025-12-22T07:43:42]
#### pros
- time blocks and time recording
#### cons
- calendar integration - imported everything, can only read calendar (but this kinds fits the work flow if day planner)
- time blocks are there own tasks (cannot be linked to existing -- unless there some retrospective linking/querying??)
- can't sum, query, do anything this recorded time???
## task notes
- The usual features
- each task is it's own mark down file
- task timer (multiple per task)
- estimated time
- kanban board
- calendar + Google calendar integration
- task dependency
- agender
### task notes testing
- it's not easy to see the tracked time, seems unfinished
-
## day planner
- integrates with the **tasks** and **daily note** plugins
- time blocking, but records the blocks in daily note
## task genius
- this is essentially a way of bringing together multiple sources for task (ie calendar, notes)
### task genius testing

# Compress compile and consolidate
## compress
Strip away the unnecessary information ie only read the 20% of the book that that gives you 80% of the information.
Connect the new information to already known information
Compress the information into something you can remember
## compile
- Ultradian cycle. 90 minutes of learning then your brain must rest for at least 20 minutes
- Learn then test, learn then test, learn then test, do this quickly, 2 weeks max for each learn test....
- Teach to learn, teach the wall
## consolidate
Stage 1, focus
Stage 2, rest
Do rest at every macro level
- while in focus, stop, let your mind replay the information
- during your 20 minute test period, do nothing, absolutely nothing, like down
- get good sleep

I've set the notification to go off when the secondary dhw tank temp (the sensor near the top) drops below 40ish.
On testing, i get multiple notifications as the temp moves up and down slightly. Need to set it to only go off once.

Way too bright bought some bits from Amazon to dim him. the transformer is a little odd as it's 24v, so it was hard to find a cheap/easy solution. But I've bought an inline dimmer and an extension cord that I can use to join without chopping into the wires on the reindeer. Although, Christmas is nearly done, so I probably won't do anything about this until next year now.

#### 3.4 Structuring and narrative
Narrative devices, use this terminolgy, it shows the examiner that you know what your talking about.
- **Story arc**: has a beginning, middle and end, and has a resolution.
- **Dual narrative**: where two sides of the story are given, and the text alternates between the two. There is a purpose to this, is it to convince the reader of one side or the other?
- **Flash-back**: Short stories that preceded the main story, there purpose is to add more context or an explanation why something is happening in the main story.
- **Circular narrative**: the last line of the text takes you back the beginning.

Which was a good thing really, it gave her the push to do without. She put her face under the water for the first time to get sinkies from the bottom, that's a huge milestone for her! She did it a few times, so proud of her, it'll do her confidence in the water a world of good.

I watch a YouTube [video](https://youtu.be/Dq3R3uS0sQ4?si=78s_BVnPGXhMAi3u) that I showed how the CEO of Obsidian [[Steph Ango]] uses [[Obsidian]] and I really like it. So, over the last day or two I've been making some changes in this vault off the back of that video.
Here's a detailed breakdown of his method [[2025-12-31 How I use Obsidian]]

[[2025-12-31 In good hands|This]] clipping taken from [[Steph Ango]] example vault (who is the CEO of Obsidian), is beautiful.
I resonate so much with this that it moves me to tears.
It's hard to put into words what it is about it, it is a lot to so with this sense of learning and wonder, being exposed to something novel or new. That's what is at the core. But i like the perspective that he comes at it from, when you let someone lead you, your 'in good hands', it's that imagery.
He also put into words that feeling I get too, you know when you see it, the intelligent and diligent craft of another human being, where they're identity is not their craft, but the pursuit of discovering the craft, discovery of the complexity, and the humility that it takes. That I recognise when I see it, and I love this framing, in good hands, when that person takes you on a journey through their craft.

Happy new year!
Spending [[New Year's Eve]] at Grandma's with [[Jools Holland]]'s [[Hootenanny]] on the tv... The show seems quite rushed in recent years, didn't it used to be a lot longer than now?

We're back at [[Grandma's House|Grandma's]] after the [[Hornsea Inshore Rescue New Year's Day Dip]]. The sea/surf was a bit rough so they had the fire service turn up to hose everyone down instead.
I did it with [[Adam Newington|Adam]], we were right at the front. Only done it once before and I'd say this was colder than going in the sea.
Reminder to self, wear wooly hat next time, I got ridiculous brain freeze. Had to retreat into the crowd a couple of times, it was so much more intense at the front, but it was great fun.
A couple of days ago [[Jessica Louise Hodgetts|Jess]] really wanted to do it as well, she changed her mind this morning. Good job she did, she got really cold just watching.
Weather: Cloudy 5°c (real feel 0°c)

Had a bit of an epiphany about how to structure this vault. Chatted to ai and [[Gemini]] put forward a category/parent property setup in every note.
Each can have multiple links, and they can be mixed between the two the category is generally the what, and the parent is the where (or folder, if you where to put it in one).
This 1st 2nd level categories catching all things that i can think of, it's standard-across templates too ..
Oh, and tags are for statues- todo, to read, to process, done.
Question is, how do i do it to this note so i don't lose it?!

It maybe that this video was picked to be on the BBC archive because off the quality of the reviewers, but these guys were way ahead off their time. I loved the insights that they offered and how relevant they where/are.

He's having a cyst removed from the bottom of his right lower eye lid and also a lump on his right front foot.
It was [[Aimie Marren]] who received him. We've agreed/requested:
- Bloods check-up
- have the lump on his foot tested
Aimie confirmed that the vet doing the surgery today is the same vet who did his [[2026-01-06 1010 Mickey vets|consultation]] previously.

I'd taken him into the [[Willows Vets|vets]] for the cyst in his eye, which the [[Sarah Marsh Vet 2025-12-22|vet]] wanted to remove. Whilst there the vet noticed the lump on his foot and asked "what about that", she wanted to remove that too! I was a little shocked as we'd asked about it a couple of times before and none of the other vets wanted to touch it. It is in a difficult place and it wasn't bothering him, so they wanted to leave it.
However, she said that if it gets any bigger they won't be able to remove it, so it would be best to try and do it. She suggested I book him in when she's doing surgeries, do I did, if she want to do it I figure she probably the best person to tackle it.

Speaking to [[Margret Dianne Hodgetts|Mum]] and [[Robert Mark Hodgetts|Dad]] this evening about [[Mickey]] and they said the [[Esmie|Esmie]] had [[Gallbladder sludge|gallbladder sludge]] for a 2-3 years until she was eventually diagnosed with [[Cushing's disease|cushing's disease]] (they had been testing for it but she didn't cross the threshold for some time). At around that point she had her [[Gallbladder|gallbladder]] removed. It was an emergency, the vet gave a 50/50 chance of the [[Surgery|surgery]] being a success--what remained of the tubes were apparently very thin and hard to reconnect after.
But, at the age of 14 Esmie pulled through.

So it's half one in the morning, and all I've done all day, all week in fact, is fuck around with [[Obsidian|obsidian]]. I'm obsessed with it. I've got course work to do, but instead in [[Dopamine Mining|dopamine mining]] with obsidian. I need to get a handle on this... Tomorrow's to-don't-do is obsidian.

[[Luke 2025-11-07|Luke]]'s just has me write down 80 items off of [[Amazon|amazon]], took around half hour ,thought it would never end. It start off he wanted to write out what hair gel he already has, that filled a page. Then he went through Amazon picking out other gel products that he wanted to try. That filled 3 pages, and it was all random names like:
01
B3
No. 3
S0
3
S3
B4
I thought he was making it up, but no, it meant something to him.
