## Welcome to My World - Jim Reeves
Welcome to the ceremony in this life celebration of David Robert Beswick, as we commemorate with sorrow, respect, joy, and thankfulness the life of Bob. A dearly loved husband, much loved dad, devoted grandad, great grandad, loving brother, uncle and good friend to many.

## Words of Welcome and Introduction (Nigel)

## Tribute to Bob
In the next few minutes, it will be a privilege to share with you the life of Bob, as well as sharing in his life, we also share in our grief for his death.
After speaking with the family, they would not want you to grieve in hurt or pain but grieve in the joy that Bob has given, has received, and has shared with each of you here today.
Bob was born on 24 April 1929 in Latebrook, Goldenhill, into a loving family to parents [[Annie Beswick|Annie]] and [[David Beswick (Sr)|David]], joining elder siblings [[Annie Beswick Jr|Annie]] aged 12 and [[Albert Beswick|Albert]] aged 10 . Sadly, another sister [[Barbara Beswick|Barbara]], born two years before had died at 3 weeks old, so Bob’s arrival was a cause for celebration. Younger brother [[Derek Beswick|Derek]] arrived 5 years later and the family was complete. Latebrook was an ideal place to grow up in, surrounded by farmland and open fields yet only 5 minutes from the bustling village of Goldenhill. As a boy, Bob would often lend a hand on a nearby farm.
He attended Goldenhill Primary and Secondary School, where lessons were often interrupted by trips to bail out the air-raid shelter. Times were tough, but they shaped Bob’s resilience, humour, and down-to-earth nature.
Leaving school at 14, Bob stepped straight into working life. He began his career at Settle Speakman as an apprentice welder, repairing railway wagons, a job he remained dedicated to into his early forties.
He then moved to Goldendale Ironworks on the outskirts of Tunstall, and when that chapter closed, he continued his skilled work at Copestick and Farrell in Victoria Road Fenton. Later, Bob embraced a new direction, joining the timber group Southern-Evans as a Timber Salesman. When Magnet merged with the company in 1975 to become Magnet & Southern.
Bob continued to serve with the same reliability and commitment he had shown all his life. After many hardworking years, he finally took a well-earned retirement.
Bob’s life truly began to flourish when he met [[Nana Beswick|Iris]]. They were both just 14, still fresh from school, when they first saw each other at the British Restaurant in Tunstall in 1943.
The country was at war, yet moments of ordinary joy, like choosing a seat near someone who caught your eye, still found their place. Although work eventually caused them to drift apart, fate stepped in again when a friend of Iris began dating a friend of Bob’s.
Their paths crossing once more began an eight-year courtship filled with dedication and young love.
Even after the war, Bob still had to complete his National Service. No 3 Training Regiment, Royal Engineers, Guillemont Barracks, Farnborough achieving the rank of corporal, He served two years at Kensington Barracks in London, and Iris would travel down on weekends to spend precious time with him.
Their love only strengthened, and on 20 September 1952, at the age of 24, they married, Bob deciding it was simply too cold to keep walking Iris home to Packmoor in the winter.
Married life began in Latebrook with Bob’s parents, Annie and David. When their first child, [[Margret Dianne Hodgetts|Dianne]], arrived in November 1954, they began saving for a place of their own, moving to Sandyford in 1956.
Their family grew with the births of [[Nigel Robert Beswick|Robert]] in 1957 and [[Richard Beswick|Richard]] in 1959, completing the Beswick household. Bob was a Dad that always had time for fun and would happily keep the children amused joining in with hide and seek, Simon Says and game of cricket.
Over the years, Bob’s roles multiplied: devoted husband, loving dad to Dianne, Robert and Richard, cherished father-in-law to [[Robert Mark Hodgetts|Rob]], [[Janet Beswick|Janet]] and [[Helen Beswick|Helen]], and proud grandad to [[Bobbie Nathan Hodgetts|Bobbie]], [[Craig Beswick|Craig]] and [[Jamie Mathew Hodgetts|Jamie]], as well as their partners [[Erin Mary Hodgetts|Erin]], [[Louise Beswick|Louise]] and [[Liv Catteral|Liv]].
His joy continued with his great-grandchildren, [[Harvey Beswick|Harvey]], [[Jessica Louise Hodgetts|Jessica]], [[Isabella Jaime Hodgetts|Bella]], [[Olivia-Mae Beswick|Olivia-Mae]] and [[Penny Hodgetts|Penny]], each one bringing him pride and laughter.
Bob was also deeply connected to his wider family, including his brother and sister-in-law, [[Derek|Derek]] and [[Dot|Dot]]. And he was surrounded by neighbours and friends who valued him dearly.
Bob’s life was shaped by hard work, loyalty, love and family. He lived through challenging times, embraced every chapter with determination, and built a life rich with connection. Those who knew him will remember not only the stories of his long life, but the warmth, kindness and steadiness he brought to every day.
Bob leaves behind a legacy held in the hearts of all who loved him and it is a legacy that will continue to live on through his family and the many lives he touched.
## Reflection
Today the ceremony of Bob’s life will have affected you in different ways and you will all have your own special times and memories with him, so many happy memories have been made by each of you, the opportunity to spend a few minutes in quiet, private reflection, to recall your most precious memories of Bob.
During our time of reflection, we shall see a photo tribute with music for Bob created by his family.

## Poem to be read by Bobbie TBC
Soft as the voice of an angel,
Breathing a lesson unheard,
Hope with a gentle persuasion,
Whispers her comforting word.
Wait till the darkness is over,
Wait till the tempest is done,
Hope for the sunshine tomorrow,
After the shower is gone.
Then when the night is upon us,
Why should the heart sink away?
When the dark midnight is over,
Watch for the breaking of day.
## Tribute to Bob continued
Bob loved playing the keyboard, inspired by players like Reg Dickson, and especially enjoyed the classic Blackpool Tower organ style.
On one memorable occasion, he even stepped in at the wedding of Robert and Janet when the organist didn’t turn up. With only a couple of lessons behind him and no time to practise, he simply said, “Here I am, I’ll have a go,” and he did.
He enjoyed being part of Sandyford Cricket Club, serving on the committee and as treasurer, and was often seen working behind the bar.
Bob and Iris loved to dance, ballroom and modern sequence, dancing in many local halls including Chell Cricket Club, Tunstall Town Hall and of course their favourite, the Blackpool Tower Ballroom.
Once retired, they rekindled their passion for ballroom dancing and continued well into their 80s, sharing many happy nights with friends.
Bob always looked forward to Saturday evenings and Strictly Come Dancing.
Bob enjoyed playing golf with his brother Derek at Goldenhill and Keele.
He liked spending time in his garden, especially growing flowers, his favourites were roses and his impressive, huge begonias. His garden was always colourful and full of beautiful bedding plants.
He kept budgies and finches and loved walking his dogs, Micky, Jackie and [[Bess]]. Pets were always part of family life.
Whenever a new pet arrived, Iris would protest to Bob, “Take it back, I’ve got enough to look after!” but they always stayed and were always loved.
Although there was always a cat in the house, the family were surprised when, once the children were grown, Iris decided to adopt a puppy from a colleague.
Only Iris thought it was a good idea at first, no one else could understand why they suddenly needed a dog! But then Micky arrived, a scruffy little black terrier cross, and she quickly became Bob’s favourite. He was utterly besotted.
Micky had a wonderful, funny little character, she would run off to the local shop knowing she’d find dropped sweets there and she turned the whole family into dog lovers. But most of all, she could play hide and seek with Bob now the children were grown up! Over the years she was followed by Jackie, and then Bess, and each time Iris would say to Bob, “No more pets!”
As the children grew up and left home, Bob and Iris had more time to enjoy their hobbies, holidays, and friends. They travelled widely, visiting America including the Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam and Yellowstone as well as Italy (Sorrento), Spain, and Austria. In the UK they enjoyed holidays in Scotland and the Peak District, anywhere with a scenic view.
In the late 1970s, Bob and Iris moved from Sandyford to a bungalow in [[28 Lynn Avenue|Lynn Avenue]], Talke and they soon became friends with their new neighbours, most of whom still live in Lynn Avenue. For more than 45 years, the neighbours have played an especially treasured part in his life, offering care, companionship and unwavering support. Bob’s family are especially grateful and appreciative of how these wonderful neighbours looked out for him as his [[dementia|dementia]] progressed. With their support and care Bob was able to live independently for a few more months and enjoy the summer and his garden before moving to [[Claybourne Care Home|Claybourne]].
Bob had many long-lasting friendships and spent happy social times with Vic and Ivy at the Bears Head and the Legs of Man.
He liked a bit of football and worked on the turnstiles at both the Victoria Ground and Vale Park. He enjoyed watching Wimbledon, though he never quite got to grips with the scoring.
Bob was fond of westerns on TV, especially those with John Wayne or James Stuart. Alongside the organ music he loved to play, his musical tastes included Jim Reeves, James Last and André Rieu. Spanish Eyes was a favourite song he played often.
We shall now stand and listen to the music by Cat Stevens if you like to sing along the words are in your order of service

## Nigel
Not everyone is lucky enough to have a loving marriage or wonderful parents, but Dianne, Robert and Richard have had the best. Looking back, the years have been filled with love and laughter, and they have so many precious memories to cherish and to comfort them in the future.
Bob will be very much missed but remembered with smiles and hearts full of love.
Bob loved his dad jokes and had a warm, daft sense of humour. He was a great dad, loved by his family and adored by all his grandchildren. In the care home he was affectionately known as “Lovely Bob.”
Bob passed away peacefully with his family by his side.

Dianne, Robert, Richard and the family would also like to invite you all to join them at the Red Bull, Church Lawton, known locally as the Bottom Bull for refreshments and the opportunity to share memories of Bob following today’s ceremony.
We have celebrated Bob’s life.
We have said our goodbyes.
But we have our memories—
and the rest of our lives to remember.
As we say our final farewell to Bob, we keep him close, held in the love and memories we carry in our hearts.
As we leave this place, we will be accompanied by a piece chosen by Bob’s family.
We wish you all a safe onward journey.

# How to Take Smart Notes by Sonke Ahrens
The [[zettelkasten]] is a note taking system that builds your notes from the bottom up. It lets you take the idea you read and embed it in this network of knowledge. One that servers you in all your goals, from learning, to reading, too writing.
- It forces you too slow down
- Instant feedback on your learning- instant reflection of our understanding
- notes forms connections
# how the creator uses tags
He creates a folder called tags, and each 'tag' is a link to note in that folder. I don't think that he uses tags, but links instead, that link to a note.

1. Find your golden time--to time when your focused and in the zone and work flows naturally--and build your day around those.

2. Allow yourself to get bored and do nothing. disconnecting and being bored activates the default mode network which is linked to the executive network.

3. Phone fasting

4. Don't multitask

It's point 2 that I think I could use. When I can't start something, do nothing instead, get bored, I think this will get me into whatever it is that I need to get into.

Whenever I buy things I try to prioritize *cost per use*. Sometimes I consider other priorities such as *cost per smile*, *cost per thrill*, *cost per externality*, and *cost per lesson*.
## Cost per use
*Cost per use* is a heuristic that helps me make decisions about most non-perishable purchases such as clothes, vehicles, tools, devices, and even services. How much will it cost me if I divide the price by its expected number of uses?
*Cost per use* accounts for longevity. Durable and repairable things may cost more upfront, but over time they cost less than things that break and need to be replaced.
For example, I buy wool socks from a brand called [Darn Tough](https://darntough.com/). They cost about four times as much as cheap socks, but they’re durable, comfortable, and have a lifetime guarantee.
How many times do you wear a pair of socks before they develop holes? It may sound silly, but if you amortize the price of each pair of socks over their expected number of uses, a good pair of socks is a worthwhile investment.

Not only will durable socks save you money, they also save you the hassle of throwing out old socks and buying new ones. Your time has value.
The best things asymptote to *zero dollars per use* over their lifetime. Not all products that have a low *cost per use* are expensive. Some things are both affordable and durable.
*Cost per use* can also be used to measure the value you expect to get out of services like gym memberships, healthcare, or *all-you-can-eat* subscriptions like streaming services.
## How to assess durability
My aim is to have fewer but better things. These are some of the questions I ask of the things that I incorporate into my life:
- Will it be as useful to me in the future as it is now?
- Is it made of durable and maintainable materials?
- Does it have a timeless [style](https://stephango.com/style) and aesthetic?
- Does it age well, wear well, build a [wabi-sabi](https://stephango.com/scars) patina?
- Does it retain its resale value? Would someone else want to own it?
- Can it be disassembled and repaired?
- Does it have replaceable, non-proprietary parts that are easy to acquire?
- Can it be powered with a standard plug or replaceable batteries?
- Can it be modified and upgraded?
- Has the maker existed for at least as long as I hope to keep the product?
- Can it perform many jobs, or only one?
- Does it have a guarantee?
- Does it rely on other products or technologies that aren’t durable?
Not all questions are relevant to all things. Not all things need to satisfy every requirement. However, I feel better about buying things that check many of these boxes. A movement called “buy it for life” has sprung up around similar priorities.
## How to estimate uses
To make purchasing decisions based on *cost per use*, you should try to guess how many times you will use the product. This sounds obvious, but it can be hard to determine, especially if it’s something you’ve never bought before.
If you are new to a hobby, like cooking or skiing, you may not yet know how many times you will use a piece of gear. It’s easy to significantly overestimate or underestimate how many times you will use something.
You should, however, be able to guess the frequency of use. Is this something you might use once per hour, day, week, month, year? This will help you determine your budget. How many dollars per month do you want to spend on this?
If you don’t know the frequency yet consider borrowing, renting, or otherwise trialing. Remember the ideal *cost per use* trends to $0. The most cost-effective choice is to not buy something you don’t need.
There is an opportunity cost to every dollar. A dollar you spend on a something that won’t get much use is a dollar you can’t save for something that will.
If you’re only going to use something once, then *cost per use* may not be the right heuristic for this decision. If you have disposable income, then the *cost per use* lens should nonetheless guide you towards something with good resale value.
The best things to splurge on are the things you use the most. If you sit on a chair eight hours a day, then a nice chair is probably a good investment.
## Reducing the cost side
Durable things reduce *cost per use* by giving you more uses before they break. But you can also reduce *cost per use* by acquiring products at a discount. You may be able to buy second-hand, inherit, or barter.
Durable things can often be great second-hand purchases *because* they are durable, and may not be the current fashion.
## Alternative heuristics
*Cost per use* is not the only way to make buying decisions. For things like consumables and experiences, you may need to approach the decision differently.
### Cost per smile
How much joy can you get out of each dollar? Some things bring lots of joy for a small amount of money: ice cream, sunsets, nature walks. A cheap date can bring many smiles per dollar.
Some things have excellent *cost per use* but few *smiles per use*. I don’t smile every time I put my nice socks on. A few years ago I bought a fairly expensive electric road bike. It probably didn’t have the best *cost per use*, but it gives me the most *joy per use* of any product I purchased in recent memory. It’s worth it to me.
### Cost per thrill
Some experiences have high *intensity per dollar*. A potency, concentration, or strength of experience. For example, foods can have high *flavor per dollar* — like hot sauce, pickles, curry, garlic, or mustard. Roller coasters, bungee jumping, or skydiving may give you a *thrill per dollar* that you can’t beat.
### Cost per externality
Some purchases may have externalities that are incompatible with your values. For example, you may wish to buy organic produce, pasture-raised eggs, or fair trade coffee. You may wish to buy products that preserve privacy, reduce environmental impact, or support a cause you believe in.
You can choose to incorporate externalities into the cost that you are paying instead of letting that cost be borne by others, or by society at large. This may increase your personal *cost per use*, but it might help change how society values things, or simply make you feel good.
### Cost per lesson
Knowledge has a cost. Sometimes that cost is monetary, sometimes that cost is time, sometimes that cost is pain. Sometimes it’s all three.
You might learn more about investing by purchasing a handful of shares in public companies than going to graduate school. You might learn more about making movies by trying to film one on your phone than going to film school.

Acquiring new ideas and perspectives can have a worthwhile cost. Being an early adopter of a product often has a poor *cost per use*, but its value is in the learning and experience per dollar.

Using [[Evergreen]] notes in Obsidian has been the most impactful change to how I think.
Evergreen notes allow you to think about complex ideas by building them up from smaller composable ideas.
My evergreen notes have titles that distill each idea in a succinct and memorable way, that I can use in a sentence. For example:
- [[A company is a superorganism]]
- [[All input is error]]
- [[Calmness is a superpower]]
- [[Cross the chasm]]
- [[Everything is a remix]]
- [[Writing is telepathy]]
- [[You have no obligation to your former self]]
- etc
You don’t need to agree with the idea for it to become an evergreen note. Evergreen notes can be very short.
I have an evergreen note called [[Creativity is combinatory uniqueness]] that is built on top of another evergreen note:
> If you believe [[Everything is a remix]], then creativity is defined by the uniqueness and appeal of the combination of elements.
Evergreen notes turn ideas into objects. By turning ideas into objects you can manipulate them, combine them, stack them. You don’t need to hold them all in your head at the same time.

I use [Obsidian](https://stephango.com/obsidian) to think, take notes, write essays, and publish this site. This is my bottom-up approach to note-taking and organizing things I am interested in. It embraces chaos and laziness to create emergent structure.
In Obsidian, a “vault” is simply a folder of files. This is important because it adheres to my [file over app](https://stephango.com/file-over-app) philosophy. If you want to create digital artifacts that last, they must be files you can control, in formats that are easy to retrieve and read. Obsidian gives you that freedom.
The following is in no way dogmatic, just one example of how you can use Obsidian. Take the parts you like.
## Vault template[#](#vault-template)
1. [Download my vault](https://github.com/kepano/kepano-obsidian/archive/refs/heads/main.zip) or clone it from [the Github repo](https://github.com/kepano/kepano-obsidian).
2. Unzip the `.zip` file to a folder of your choosing.
3. In Obsidian open the folder as a vault.
- My theme [Minimal](https://stephango.com/minimal) with the [Flexoki](https://stephango.com/flexoki) color scheme.
- [Obsidian Web Clipper](https://stephango.com/obsidian-web-clipper) to save articles and pages from the web, see my [clipper templates](https://github.com/kepano/clipper-templates) for specific sites I clip from.
- [Obsidian Sync](https://obsidian.md/sync) to sync notes between my desktop, phone and tablet.
- [Obsidian Bases](https://help.obsidian.md/bases) to view notes by category.
- [Obsidian Maps](https://help.obsidian.md/bases/views/map) for maps used in some of my templates.
## Personal rules[#](#personal-rules)
Rules I follow in my personal vault:
- Avoid splitting content into multiple vaults.
- Avoid folders for organization.
- Avoid non-standard Markdown.
- Always pluralize categories and tags.
- Use internal links profusely.
- Use `YYYY-MM-DD` dates everywhere.
- Use the 7-point scale for ratings.
- Keep [a single to-do list](https://stephango.com/todos) per week.
Having a [consistent style](https://stephango.com/style) collapses hundreds of future decisions into one, and gives me focus. For example, I always pluralize tags so I never have to wonder what to name new tags. Choose rules that feel comfortable to you and write them down. Make your own style guide. You can always change your rules later.
## Folders and organization[#](#folders-and-organization)
I use very few folders. I avoid folders because many of my entries belong to more than one area of thought. My system is oriented towards speed and laziness. I don’t want the overhead of having to consider where something should go.
I do not use nested sub-folders. I do not use the file explorer much for navigation. I mostly navigate using the quick switcher, backlinks, or links within a note.
My notes are primarily organized using the `categories` property. Categories display an overview of related notes, using the [bases](https://help.obsidian.md/bases) feature in Obsidian.
**Most of my notes are in the root of the vault**, not a folder. This where I write about my personal world: journal entries, essays, [evergreen](https://stephango.com/evergreen-notes) notes, and other personal notes. If a note is in the root, I know it’s something I wrote, or relates directly to me.
Two reference folders I use:
- **References** where I write about things that exist outside my world. Books, movies, places, people, podcasts, etc. Always named using the title e.g. `Book title.md` or `Movie title.md`.
- **Clippings** where I save things other people wrote, mostly essays and articles.
Three admin folders exist so that their contents don’t show up in the file navigation:
- **Attachments** for images, audio, videos, PDFs, etc.
- **Daily** for my daily notes, all named `YYYY-MM-DD.md`. I do not write anything in daily notes, they exist solely to be linked to from other entries.
- **Templates** for templates.
Two folders are present in the downloadable version of my vault for the sake of clarity. In my personal vault, these notes would be in the root, not a folder.
- **Categories** contains top-level overviews of notes per category (e.g. Books, Movies, Podcasts, etc).
- **Notes** contains example notes.
## Links[#](#links)
I use internal links profusely throughout my notes. I try to always link the first mention of something. My journal entries are often a stream of consciousness cataloging recent events, finding connections between things. Often the link is *unresolved*, meaning that the note for that link isn’t created yet. Unresolved links are important because they are breadcrumbs for future connections between things.
A journal entry in the **root** of my vault might look something like this:
```
I went to see the movie [[Perfect Days]] with [[Aisha]] at [[Vidiots]] and had Filipino food at [[Little Ongpin]]. I loved this quote from Perfect Days: [[Next time is next time, now is now]]. It reminds me of the essay ...
```
The movie, movie theater, and restaurant each link to entries in my **References** folder. In these reference notes I capture properties, my rating, and thoughts about that thing. I use [Web Clipper](https://stephango.com/obsidian-web-clipper) to help populate properties from databases like IMDB. The quote was meaningful to me, so it became an [evergreen note](https://stephango.com/evergreen-notes) in my root folder. The essay I mention is in my **Clippings** folder, because I didn’t write it myself.
This heavy linking style becomes more useful as time goes on, because I can trace how ideas emerged, and the branching paths these ideas created.
## Fractal journaling and random revisit[#](#fractal-journaling-and-random-revisit)
Fractal journaling and randomization are how I tame the wilderness that a knowledge base can grow into.
Throughout the day I use Obsidian’s *unique note* hotkey to write individual thoughts as they come up. This shortcut automatically creates a note with the prefix `YYYY-MM-DD HHmm` to which I may add a title that describes the idea.
Every few days I review these journal fragments and compile the salient thoughts. I then review those reviews monthly, and review the monthly reviews yearly (using [this template](https://stephango.com/40-questions)). The result is a fractal web of my life that I can zoom in and out of at varying degrees of detail. I can trace back where individual thoughts came from, and how they bubbled up into bigger themes.
Every few months I set aside time for a “random revisit”. I use the *random note* hotkey to quickly travel randomly through my vault. I often use the local graph at shallow depth to see related notes. This helps me revisit old ideas, create missing links, and find inspiration in past thoughts. It’s also an opportunity to do maintenance, like fix formatting based on new rules in my personal style guide.
People have asked me if this could be automated with language models but I do not care to do so. I enjoy this process. Doing this maintenance helps me understand my own patterns. [Don’t delegate understanding](https://stephango.com/understand).
## Properties and templates[#](#properties-and-templates)
Almost every note I create starts from a [template](https://github.com/kepano/kepano-obsidian/tree/main/Templates). I use templates heavily because they allow me to lazily add information that will help me find the note later. I have a template for every category with [properties](https://help.obsidian.md/properties) at the top, to capture data such as:
- **Dates** — created, start, end, published
- **People** — author, director, artist, cast, host, guests
- **Themes** — grouping by genre, type, topic, related notes
- **Locations** — neighborhood, city, coordinates
- **Ratings** — more on this below
A few rules I follow for properties:
- Property names and values should aim to be reusable across categories. This allows me to find things across categories, e.g. `genre` is shared across all media types, which means I can see an archive of *Sci-fi* books, movies and shows in one place.
- Templates should aim to be composable, e.g. *Person* and *Author* are two different templates that can be added to the same note.
- Short property names are faster to type, e.g. `start` instead of `start‑date`.
- Default to `list` type properties instead of `text` if there is any chance it might contain more than one link or value in the future.
The [.obsidian/types.json](https://github.com/kepano/kepano-obsidian/blob/main/.obsidian/types.json) file lists which properties are assigned to which types (i.e. `date`, `number`, `text`, etc).
## Rating system[#](#rating-system)
Anything with a `rating` uses an integer from 1 to 7:
- 7 — **Perfect**, must try, life-changing, go out of your way to seek this out
- 6 — **Excellent**, worth repeating
- 5 — **Good**, don’t go out of your way, but enjoyable
- 4 — **Passable**, works in a pinch
- 3 — **Bad**, don’t do this if you can
- 2 — **Atrocious**, actively avoid, repulsive
- 1 — **Evil**, life-changing in a bad way
Why this scale? I like rating out of 7 better than 4 or 5 because I need more granularity at the top, for the good experiences, and 10 is too granular.
## Publishing to the web[#](#publishing-to-the-web)
This site is written, edited, and published directly from Obsidian. To do this, I break one of my rules listed above — I have a separate vault for my site. I use a *static site generator* called [Jekyll](https://jekyllrb.com/) to automatically compile my notes into a website and convert them from Markdown to HTML.
My publishing flow is easy to use, but a bit technical to set up. This is because I like to have full control over every aspect of my site’s layout. If you don’t need full control you might consider [Obsidian Publish](https://obsidian.md/publish) which is more user-friendly, and what I use for my [Minimal documentation site](https://minimal.guide/publish/download).
For this site, I push notes from Obsidian to a GitHub repo using the [Obsidian Git](https://obsidian.md/plugins?id=obsidian-git) plugin. The notes are then automatically compiled using [Jekyll](https://jekyllrb.com/) with my web host [Netlify](https://www.netlify.com/). I also use my [Permalink Opener](https://stephango.com/permalink-opener) plugin to quickly open notes in the browser so I can compare the draft and live versions.
The color palette is [Flexoki](https://stephango.com/flexoki), which I created for this site. My Jekyll template is not public, but you can get similar results from [this template](https://github.com/maximevaillancourt/digital-garden-jekyll-template) by Maxime Vaillancourt. There are also many alternatives to Jekyll you can use to compile your site such as [Quartz](https://quartz.jzhao.xyz/), [Astro](https://astro.build/), [Eleventy](https://www.11ty.dev/), and [Hugo](https://gohugo.io/).

There is a feeling I search for: *being in good hands*. It is the feeling I look to give and the feeling I look to receive.
I know I am in good hands when I sense a cohesive point of view expressed with attention to detail.
I can feel it almost instantly. In any medium. Music, film, fashion, architecture, writing, software. At a Japanese restaurant it’s what *omakase* aims to be. I leave it up to you, chef.
When I am in good hands I open myself to a state of curiosity and appreciation. I allow myself to suspend preconceived notions. I give you freedom to take me where you want to go. I immerse myself in your worldview and pause judgement.
I want to be convinced of something new. I want my mind to be changed. Later I may disagree, but for now I am letting the experience soak in.
That trust doesn’t come easily. As an audience member it’s about feeling cared for from the moment I interact with your work. It’s about feeling a well-defined point of view permeate what you make.
If my mind was changed, I must have been in good hands.

## A neurodivergent drinking story
By Neurospicy Poems

Characters: ADHD, Autism and PDA.
I love a drink.
Mainly for the doing –
The ritual sip,
something to hold
while I mask in meetings,
while I smile at parties –
something to fidget with.
It’s a stim,
a social shield,
a way to anchor my eyes
and hush the chaos in my mind.
The heat of coffee –
comfort in a cup.
I look like I fit in.
I look calm.
At least that’s how I feel.
But alcohol…
that was different.
First, it soothed.
Loosened the strings
Autism tied too tightly.
I stopped rehearsing my lines.
Stopped scanning faces for approval.
I felt normal –
almost human.
Then –
ADHD clapped her hands.
PDA began to smirk.
Playtime!
Say the thing.
Do the thing.
Dance, sing, go wild.
Be the version of us
that doesn’t care who’s watching.
Do all the things
Autism warned us not to.
And then –
morning.
What did I do?
What did I say?
Autism curled in a ball,
replaying every word,
unable to fully recall.
Once informed –
begging to vanish.
The shame too loud.
Never drinking again.
Repeat.
Repeat.
Repeat.
Until finally –
I meant it.

**Author’s Note**
This poem captures a time when I kept repeating the same drinking pattern, not because I lacked willpower, but because I didn’t yet understand my own neurodivergence. I didn’t recognise Autism, ADHD or PDA as distinct internal parts, so I couldn’t interpret why alcohol changed me so quickly or why the aftermath unravelled me. My Awareness-to-Understanding Pathway™ was disrupted because without that self-knowledge, the loop kept breaking in the same places:
**1\. Event:**
A social situation where I felt expected to mask, perform or fit in, and alcohol was available as a way to cope.
2\. Body response:
My nervous system reacted before I had context. I felt awkward, tense, out of place and hyper-aware of myself. My mind went into scanning mode, and the social pressure felt heavy.
**3\. Awareness (shallow):**
I noticed I felt different from other people, but I didn’t know why. Alcohol briefly made me feel relaxed and more “normal,” so I registered the shift but not the meaning of it. I didn’t notice the cost until afterwards. This was the first break in the pathway.
**4\. Interpretation (inaccurate, delayed and incomplete):**
My interpretation at the time was wrong. I thought I was shy, awkward and “weird,” and that alcohol gave me confidence. I didn’t know it was loosening Autism’s control, amplifying ADHD’s impulsivity and giving PDA a sense of freedom, or that I was using it to cope with masking and social pressure. The next morning arrived tangled in shame and fragmented memory, and without that broader context I couldn’t complete this stage.
**5\. Action (reactive and premature)**
Behaviour happened before accurate interpretation or understanding. I acted from the nervous system, not from clarity: oversharing, impulsivity, boundary loss. Then the crash afterwards – shutdown, panic, self-criticism.
**6\. Understanding (missing):**
Without knowing my neurodivergent profile or internal system, I had no way to make sense of what had happened. The emotional meaning and the motive behind my behaviour were both missing. I thought I had behaved poorly, and because I couldn’t understand why, the event stayed open in my nervous system. Even after I stopped drinking, I still carried the shame because the pattern had never been understood.
**The Completion Loop™**
Years later, writing this poem allowed me to complete the missing stages:
**Reflection → Interpretation → Understanding → Aligned Action**
**What I learned**
This poem is more than a drinking story. It maps what happens when Interpretation and Understanding aren’t yet available. Through the Neurodivergent Voice Method™, I could explore what each part was doing, what alcohol offered, what it cost and why the aftermath was so unbearable. When the meaning eventually surfaced, the shame eased because I had the clarity to finally forgive myself. This is what allowed the loop to close.
This sits within the original processing model I developed from my lived experience – the Awareness-to-Understanding Pathway™.
If this lands anywhere in your own story, I’d love to hear it ❁

title: "The PARA Method: How to Organize Your Life in 4 Categories"

Have you ever saved something to reference later but forgotten where you stored it? Or felt overwhelmed by everything you need to organize? Perhaps you’ve thought, “I should create a better system for storing and finding my files, tasks, and projects.”
You’re not alone. Information overload has been [a workplace (and personal!) problem for more than a decade.](https://hbr.org/2009/09/death-by-information-overload) The worst part? It’s only growing.
Tiago Forte saw it coming. So, he developed the PARA method – a digital organization system that helps you organize your tasks, ideas, and resources in a simple way. The best part? It’s easy to implement and flexible to mould according to your needs.
In this article, I’ll explain the PARA method's details, origin, and benefits, and show you how to implement it in Todoist.
## What is the PARA method?
Put simply, the PARA method is a system to organize your digital life with its abundance of apps, platforms, and websites (although you can use the principles with your physical files, too). Here’s what the acronym stands for:
- **Projects**: These are the current tasks you’re working on. Projects are for the short-term and have a clear deadline or foreseeable completion date. For example, your sales presentation tomorrow is a project you need to work on.
- **Areas**: Zoom out a little bit, and you’ll see the large pieces of your life that keep things in motion. These are long-term responsibilities that require continual maintenance with no end in sight. Your health, family, travel, and productivity would be the “areas” in the PARA method.
- **Resources**: These are the things you read or come across and would want to save for the future. It can be work-related – like a sales tactic you’d like to experiment with – or personal – like your hobbies.
- **Archives**: This one’s self-explanatory. Archives are anything from the above three categories you don’t need anymore – but might need in the future. For example, if you were working on a house renovation project in a place you no longer live in, that project can move into the archive folder.
The goal is to organize your entire life into four folders to reduce your overwhelm and find what you need when you search for it without scrambling.

Many people often get hung up on the difference between a project and an area and struggle to categorize their information or ideas.
The first solution to this is to follow your gut. Don’t overthink it – trust your intuition. The aim isn’t to categorize everything perfectly, but to organize everything you need in an actionable, easy-to-maintain-way.
That said, I know this answer isn’t always easy to digest. So, here’s a flowchart to guide you in making the right choice:

[Tiago Forte](https://fortelabs.com/) created the PARA method as a part of his larger project, [Building A Second Brain](https://www.buildingasecondbrain.com/). There’s a whole [book dedicated to the PARA method](https://www.buildingasecondbrain.com/para) if you get inclined to dive even deeper into this system.

## Should you go PARA (and never go back)? 3 Benefits of the PARA Method
I hear the groans. *“Ugh. Do I need yet another system to organize my life better?”*
If your existing method is working efficiently – helping you store and categorize everything in that big brain – then great! But if you often find yourself anxious, scrambling to get things done, hunting for that one file you were sure you saved, it’s worth considering adding the PARA method to your life. Here are the top three benefits you’ll see almost immediately:
### 1: You’ll experience less mental load and decision fatigue
You consume a lot of information in a day. And your brain pops nearly a gazillion ideas, too. Without an organization system like the PARA method in place, you’ll lose all those gems.
With the PARA method, you’ll take the load off your shoulders. You won’t stay up past your bedtime tallying everything you have to “remember” because you didn’t store and categorize it anywhere.
And you wouldn’t have to decide, “Where do I put this so I can find it when I need it?” about any note, file, or piece of information because you’ve already set up a system with four possible options.
### 2: You’ll find what you need, when you need it
How many times have you thought, “I’ll just remember it!” and forgotten something important? Or needed to refer to something and thought, “I know I saved that somewhere...” and never found the resource again? Been there, done that (too many times).
The PARA method ensures you keep your brain organized so you can find exactly what you need whenever you need it. You won’t have to rummage around a messy (digital) drawer to find what you’re looking for. All you have to do is search for it within one of the four folders.
### 3: Your productivity and focus will improve
The PARA method is a way to organize your life – you’ll know the most important priorities of your life (areas), the things you need to actively work on & when (projects), and have a catch-all folder for anything else you need (resources). Imagine the level of clarity you’ll gain once you’ve set up your life using the PARA system over a long period of time.
And having this clarity and focus will allow your productivity to soar and your creativity to shine. Instead of spending your time deciding, finding, or organizing, you’ll spend your time [getting things done](https://www.todoist.com/productivity-methods/getting-things-done).

## Medical Review: ADHD Titration Appointment
### Patient & Attendees
- **Patient:** [[Bobbie Nathan Hodgetts|Bobbie]]
- **Primary Practitioner:** [[Dr Marie Cawley NSCHT Psychiatrist|Dr Marie Cawley]]
- **Nurse Practitioner:** [[Laura NSCHT 2026-01-07|Laura]]

### Medication Overview
- **Current Prescription:** [[Elvanse|Elvanse]] 30mg (Switched from [[Concerta|Concerta]] 54mg in November).
- **Patient Feedback:** Bobbie reports that the current 30mg dose is significantly less effective than Concerta, resulting in a noticeable dip in concentration.
- **Goal:** To find a therapeutic dose of Elvanse that matches the efficacy of previous medications ([[Medikinet|Medikinet]]/Concerta) but with fewer side effects (e.g., lower heart rate compared to Medikinet).
### Clinical Observations
- **Vitals (Self-Reported):**
- **Blood Pressure:** 119/78 (Stable).
- **Pulse:** 56 bpm.
- **Weight:** 86 kg (Stable).
- **Side Effects on Elvanse 30mg:**
- **Sleep:** No issues reported.
- **Appetite:** Slight decrease, but still eating adequately.
- **Mood/Mental Health:** Stable and fine.
- **Medical History:** History of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation; prescribed Bisoprolol but has never required it.
### Revised Treatment Plan
- **Dose Adjustment:** Increase Elvanse to **50mg daily**.
- *Note:* While 40mg is the standard next step, S1 agreed to a larger jump to 50mg due to the patient’s size and his prior tolerance for higher stimulant doses.
- **Risk Management:**
- Patient warned of potential nausea, headaches, or vomiting due to the 20mg increase.
- Backup prescription for 40mg will be provided if the 50mg dose is poorly tolerated.
- **Prescription Logistics:**
- To be collected from [[Bennet Centre|Bennett Centre]] on Monday after 1:00 PM.
- Patient to continue current 30mg dose until the new supply is collected.
- **Admin Advice:** Weekend breaks from medication are permitted (max 4 days off) to allow for alcohol consumption.

**00:00 Marie:** Hello.
**00:03 Bobbie:** Hello.
**00:05 Marie:** Hi, how you doing?
**00:08 Bobbie:** I'm good, thank you.
**00:10 Marie:** Um, so Bobbie, just before we start, um, I hope it's okay, we've got nurse practitioner Laura who is just going to join, um, she's just about to join. Um, so she's taken over from the role of our previous nurse practitioner, [[Claire Budding|Claire]], and it's likely that you're going to be seen her in the future, so I just wanted to introduce you guys. So Laura, Bobbie; Bobbie, Laura.
**00:34 Bobbie:** Yes, sure.
**00:35 Laura:** Hi.
**00:36 Bobbie:** Hi.
**00:38 Laura:** Hi Bobbie. Nice to meet you.
**00:41 Bobbie:** And you.
**00:42 Marie:** Um, so we, we're doing your titration appointment again today and um, you last saw me was in November, um, so let's have a look what the plan was last time. Um, so you'd asked to stop the Concerta and you wanted to go over to Elvanse. So what we did Laura, Bobbie was on a dose of 54 milligrams of Concerta. Um, when we're switching over to Elvanse, you, you don't just do a, do a straight swap just because um, the, the side effect profile can be a bit more powerful with Elvanse. Concerta's quite gentle with side effects usually. So what we, what we did we went to a dose of 30 milligrams, um, which is like a, you know, a starting dose for, for somebody of Bobbie's weight and height. Um, how have you been finding the medication, Bobbie?
**01:43 Bobbie:** Um, I haven't really noticed it to be fair, yeah. Um, I don't think it's enough. I don't notice it anywhere near as much as the Concerta.
**02:00 Marie:** Yeah, which, you know, it would be because we've started you on like a basic dose and an equivalent to Concerta is 50 basically, um, in...
**02:11 Bobbie:** Right.
**02:12 Marie:** Are you still taking your Bisoprolol at the moment?
**02:14 Bobbie:** Sorry, say that again? The sound's gone a little bit.
**02:17 Marie:** Sorry, are you still taking your Bisoprolol at the moment?
**02:21 Bobbie:** Uh, I've never actually taken it. I was prescribed it years ago as a pill-in-pocket kind of thing but yeah, I've never...
**02:29 Marie:** You never actually take...
**02:30 Bobbie:** I've never had to take one, no.
**02:31 Marie:** Um, so that was prescribed initially for atrial fibrillation, is that right?
**02:37 Bobbie:** Yeah, paroxysmal or whatever it is, yeah.
**02:40 Marie:** The paroxysmal one, yeah, that's the one, yeah. Yeah. Okay, no problem. Um, so we were changing Concerta for Elvanse. So you've not found it to be as effective as the Concerta 54 milligrams. Have you noticed, say, like a dip in your concentration then?
**03:13 Bobbie:** Yeah, yeah, definitely.
**03:16 Marie:** Okay.
**03:22 Marie:** So the reason for, for changing, um, because originally you'd been on Medikinet but you were having some side effects with like a high heart rate at rest, so that's the original reason why you switched to Concerta. Um, but what Bobbie was finding was that he was more motivated on the Medikinet than he was on the Concerta, um, and you were starting to struggle to keep up with assignments, weren't you?
**03:57 Bobbie:** Yeah, that's right.
**03:58 Marie:** So the idea was we change to a different stimulant, build you up to a therapeutic dose in the hope that you'll get better symptom control than you did with the Concerta and, you know, as I said previously, the Medikinet, um, particularly with side effects, it can have quite a few in comparison to the Concerta. The Concerta seems to be a bit more gentle but in addition, you don't end up getting as good, um, control of the ADHD symptoms in certain patients and I think that's what you were experiencing with it, Bobbie.
**04:35 Bobbie:** Yeah.
**04:36 Marie:** Um, okay. So um, how has your sleep been on the Elvanse?
**04:42 Bobbie:** Uh, fine. Yeah, no problems there.
**04:46 Marie:** Okay.
**04:47 Bobbie:** As far as side effects go, there hasn't really been any at all.
**04:53 Marie:** That, that's good to know. So not had any side effects. And how's your appetite?
**05:03 Bobbie:** Um, it has affected my appetite a little. Um, yeah, but I still eat enough too much to be fair, so...
**05:11 Marie:** The appetite's dipped a little but you're still eating fine?
**05:14 Bobbie:** Yeah, yeah.
**05:31 Marie:** Have you, have you been diagnosed with any other medical problems at all since the last time we spoke?
**05:38 Bobbie:** No.
**05:39 Marie:** No. Okay. Um, so Bobbie, I can't remember, last time, did we take the observations during the, during the call or do you normally go somewhere else to get your blood pressure done?
**05:54 Bobbie:** I've, I've, I just gave you the, because I normally do them on a kind of regular basis myself anyway because I've got a blood pressure monitor, so I just gave you the last readings that I took.
**06:04 Marie:** Have you, have you got some up-to-date ones?
**06:06 Bobbie:** I did one yesterday in anticipation, yeah. Uh, where are we? That's the sixth. Yeah, so yesterday morning it was 119 over 78.
**06:22 Marie:** Yeah, so that, that's really similar to the last reading, very stable. And what was your pulse?
**06:28 Bobbie:** 56.
**06:30 Marie:** Okay. And do you know what your weight is at the moment?
**06:35 Bobbie:** Uh, 86 kilos thereabouts.
**06:40 Marie:** About the same? Okay. That's pretty good considering you've just gone through Christmas as well. I always find people say "Oh, I put on after over the festive period." So no, that, that is good. It might also be the medication as well, as, you know, it can increase your metabolism a little bit. So um, but as long as it's stable and you're not, you're not dropping weight. And everything all right with your mental health and things and your mood at the moment?
**07:07 Bobbie:** Yeah, fine, no problems there.
**07:09 Marie:** Fantastic. Okay. And um, everything the same with I think you said you just drink alcohol at the weekend and you just have three units?
**07:19 Bobbie:** Uh, or three, three drinks, so that's might be six, that's what kind of my cap what I try to stick to on any one night, but yeah, weekends, obviously a bit more over Christmas, but yeah.
**07:31 Marie:** Yeah, yeah. Okay, that's great. Okay. So observations are looking fine, Bobbie. Um, no concerns there. Um, so if, if it's okay with you, I'd like to increase your Elvanse to the next level, so we go to 40 milligrams a day. Um, so what we would do, we'll do your prescription, take that for another sort of four weeks and then we'll book you in again. And if you need the next dosage, we just do the same again, we check your observations and then we can go to a 50 milligram dosage.
**08:08 Bobbie:** What's the kind of where do you normally kind of get up to with this? What's the kind of therapeutic...
**08:15 Marie:** I would say every patient is different. Now obviously you're male, males, you know, typically tend to require a bigger dosage because you weigh more. Um, the maximum I'd say we go up to is about 70. Um, now what sometimes happens is if patients are noticing that despite being on the full dose of 70, that perhaps the medication isn't lasting them through the day, we sometimes add an immediate-release top-up in the afternoon. Not everybody needs it though because in theory, Elvanse should be in the system for 12 hours. So, you know, ideally you would expect if you were on 70 milligrams, you took that at 6:00 AM in the morning, you shouldn't be wearing off till 6:00 PM. But some people describe like a crash period in the afternoon and their concentration dips, they become irritable, they become dysregulated. If that were to happen, we would give you an immediate-release sort of midday, afternoon, because that only lasts in the system for four to six hours. Having said that, I have got some patients that are on a split dose of Elvanse. So they take it at 2:00 PM, the second dose, and it doesn't affect their sleep. So everybody is different. Um, so some get insomnia from it, some don't. Some patients it helps them sleep. And I guess the difficulty we have is we don't know how each patient is going to respond to things until we try all this. So the next step for you would obviously be, you're not having any any improvement from the moment you take it, let's go to the next dose in the morning, which would be 40. Still no improvement, we go to 50 and so on. If it is that you don't have a good response even though you are on full dosage of Elvanse, the next step would be looking at a non-stimulant, which is one called Atomoxetine. But generally speaking, patients don't usually go onto Atomoxetine unless the Elvanse is contraindicated, so usually Elvanse tends to work better than Atomoxetine for the majority of patients. Um, given that you did have a positive effect with Medikinet, I know the side effects were a bit grim, but the ADHD symptom profile, it did improve, didn't it, on Medikinet? There's a good chance that it will with Elvanse because again, it's a stimulant.
**10:56 Bobbie:** Yeah.
**10:57 Marie:** So are you happy for me to do the increase and then we have another appointment in about four weeks and see how you're getting on?
**11:08 Bobbie:** Um, yeah. Yeah. It was just last time I think when we spoke about it, because it can be quite long between kind of consultations, we kind of spoke about going up a bit further up to the because I'd kind of been okay on Medikinet and...
**11:21 Marie:** You, you can. Um, it's just the only thing I would be, would say, is you know because obviously it's a strong stimulant. Sometimes when patients do the 20 milligram increase, they might get that uncomfortable nausea, the headaches and things like that. Some people have vomiting. So I'm happy to do 50 milligrams, obviously your observations are fine, but just bear in mind you might get some of those side effects just because we've, we've done a bigger jump.
**11:53 Bobbie:** Yeah.
**11:54 Marie:** So are you, are you happy with that?
**11:57 Bobbie:** Yeah, yeah.
**11:58 Marie:** All right. If you do...
**11:59 Bobbie:** It just seems like a long time to have been on this and I've been kind of, yeah.
**12:03 Marie:** I know. I know. I know. If you do have any problems and you feel horrendous, save the 50s and I'll do you a prescription for the 40s and we'll get, we'll bridge a gap. But hope, hope, hopefully you'll be okay. I know a lot of patients, even though Elvanse is a strong stimulant and it lasts in the system for a while, patients do find the side effect profile a bit gentler than the Medikinet.
**12:31 Bobbie:** Yeah, definitely, yeah.
**12:33 Marie:** Hopefully you'll be okay. But if you do start feeling dreadful, just don't take the next day's dosage, send us an email immediately and we'll, we'll get you that prescription ready. Um, again, with the Elvanse, if you do want to have a break at the weekend, if you're having a drink, just have a break on the day you're drinking, get back on it whenever you want to. As long as you don't have more than four days off it, it's absolutely fine.
**13:02 Bobbie:** Yes, yeah.
**13:04 Marie:** All right. Um, is there anything else you wanted to ask today?
**13:08 Bobbie:** No, no. I think we're all good.
**13:10 Marie:** Okay. So I'll do the prescription, it'll be at the Benet Center, it'll be Monday um, after 1:00. Um, so if you're able to collect it um, anytime then, um, and then just get started on the medication the following day. And just, you know, take your 30s in the meantime.
**13:32 Bobbie:** Yeah, just saved that in my calendar so I don't forget it.
**13:35 Marie:** Yeah, no worries. All right then Bobbie. Well, um, lovely catching up with you again. It is likely you might see Laura next time.
**13:44 Bobbie:** Yeah.
**13:45 Marie:** But if Laura has any questions, she just comes and checks with me anyway, but she's very, very experienced lady, um, you know, prescriber, so you're in good hands, okay?
**13:56 Bobbie:** Yeah, no problem.
**13:58 Laura:** Nice to meet you Bobbie. Take care.
**14:00 Bobbie:** Yeah, and you. I'll see you the next time.
**14:02 Marie:** Yeah, okay. All right, thank you. Bye-bye.
**14:04 Laura:** Bye.
**14:05 Bobbie:** Bye.

## Introduction
The Outbuildings are getting a [Vent-Axia Lo-Carbon Sentinel Kinetic BH MVHR unit](https://www.vent-axia.com/range/lo-carbon-sentinel-kinetic-bh) which will ventilate the heated-and-insulated half of the building. There will be Extract vents in the Shower Room, the Utility Room, and the Plant Room (one in each) – and Supply vents in the Workshop (three). The [[Vent-Axia|Vent-Axia]] unit is rather less fancy than the PAUL Novus [[MVHR|MVHR]] unit in the House, but should be capable enough for its less demanding role – especially since any fan noise or inter-room noise transmission is really not an issue. The replacement filters are *much* cheaper than for the more ‘advanced’ MVHR units.
These Vent-Axia units are relatively common and several other people have explored the options for integration with home automation ‘hub’ applications such as [[Home Assistant|Home Assistant]]. The manufacturer has also been helpful in publishing documentation that describes the (limited) integration capabilities – most notably this: [Sentinel Kinetic Range BMS Capabilities](https://github.com/aelias-eu/vent-axia-remote/blob/main/docs/sentinel_kinetic-BMS.pdf) (PDF). There is no option to (directly) control the unit via a smartphone app.
## Integration Options
In summary, the integration options boil down to:
- Using the 230V ‘Switched Live’ input to trigger a ventilation Boost cycle
- This input is intended to be connected to a light switch in a bathroom – the same as a standalone extractor fan might be connected to a bathroom light
- The Switched Live wants to be from the same 230V circuit as supplies the Non-Switched Live – which would not normally be the case; Vent-Axia offer an [Isolator Relay Controller](https://www.vent-axia.com/range/isolator-relay-controller) which can address this
- Using a momentary dry-contact input on any one of the SW1 – SW5 terminals to trigger a ventilation Boost cycle (when the unit is running in Control Mode 1)
- These are intended to be connected to momentary wall-switches but can be any input that ‘behaves like one of those – such as a relay driven in a short on-off cycle
- Using a persistent dry-contact input on one of the SW1 – SW3 terminals to force Low, Normal or Boost ventilation for as long as the input is active (when the unit is running in Control Mode 2)
- Typically connected to relays controlled by a BMS or Home Automation system
- Terminal SW5 can also force the unit to stop completely – primarily intended for integration with a fire alarm system
- Using a 0-10V analogue input to emulate a CO2 or Humidity sensor and control the fan speed accordingly
- This allows for more fine-grained speed control than the other options – rather than just the pre-set Normal and Boost speeds
- The equivalent input on the PAUL Novus is used to enable Home Assistant to control the fan speed on the House MVHR – although that is the only available integration mechanism for the Novus
- Using a microcontroller to emulate the Vent-Axia remote keypad, which can select from the Low / Normal / Boost settings or trigger a timed Boost cycle
- See the code for [vent-axia-bridge](https://github.com/ryancdotorg/vent-axia-bridge) on GitHub, which provides access over WiFi; the accompanying documentation is very limited
## Conclusion
All of these options (apart from the last one) could be robustly integrated via KNX module(s):
- Using a KNX ‘switch actuator’ (i.e. a relay bank) module for the relay inputs – ideally with 4 channels (to cover all the ‘Control Mode 2’ SW1-3 and SW5 inputs)
- Either a standalone 4-channel module – with separate terminals for each channel: something like the MDT AKS-0410.03 (Switch Actuator AKS Standard 10 A) or the MDT AKK-0416.03 (Switch Actuator AKK compact)
- Or 4 channels of a larger relay bank, which might also provide relay inputs to e.g. the alarm system
- Using a KNX ‘analogue input / output’ module for the 0-10V input
- Either one of the [MDT KNX AIO](https://www.mdt.uk/products/product-detail/actuators/analog-in-/outputs/analog-in-/-output.html) modules should be suitable; about £75 for the 2-channel module
The main question is whether there is any real requirement to force the unit out of ‘Automatic’ operation – given that its built-in scheduling options seem reasonably comprehensive. Some owners report that they had multiple (manual) ‘Boost’ switches installed but never use them.
As the MVHR unit is being installed in the Plant Room, that’s the easiest location to retro-fit any of the integration options. Probably best to see how it performs with just its built-in controller before planning to integrate it.
